Japanese Samples Tested using Gamma Spectroscopy — First Results
Recently, a friend of mine sent me a series of samples from all across Japan. He, my friend, lives in Japan and obtained these samples at some personal risk. I have started the process of testing each of the many samples using gamma spectroscopy and other techniques. I will be posting my results for each sample as I test them, which may take time given my busy work schedule.
I have tested an air filter from an AC/heater unit in Saga City, Saga Prefecture (1100 Km south of Fukushima), Japan and a sample from just under a water rain spout in residential housing area (back yard), of a person living in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture (26km NE from Tokyo).
I found Cs134 and Cs137 in the soil sample and I believe that I found Kr85 in the air filter. You can read the details and download my full report from my website. Please review my first report, Sample J-F, and my preliminary details of Sample J-A, which I will fully post soon.
Please keep in mind that these sorts of contaminants are quite expected in Japan. Each sample comes from a few hundred to only 1100 km from Fukushima, so the results are expected.
I have been sick for the past week and very busy too! This has stopped my video production. I will restart very soon!
I recently purchased this beautiful Civil Defense version 700, Victoreen Instrument Company, Model six A, Geiger counter from eBay for about $200 dollars.
Many units like it sell for less, but the seller reconditioned the unit and replaced many of the parts. The unit was in great condition and ready for anouther 50 years of use!!!

Below are my findings…
I came home today to find the very first drizzle of rain! I tested the rain and found that it appeared to be radioactive. My 32 new bars of lead were still drying from their ploy-coat, so I was down to my reserve 13 bars, barely enough for a clean scan, and I was totally unready.
My etiquette, scientifically speaking, was quite blown. Better luck next time I suppose.
Regardless, I got some good data and good readings as well. My instrument, a UCS30 gamma spectrometer uses a 38mm NaI(Tl) Scintillator, type 6S6P1.5VDC2, and is quite effective at detecting radiation. I fired it up and took a look into the paper towel swipe I had made.
My SE International Inspector EXP+ detected about 150-180 CPM from the water on the paper. My background for that unit, in that room, is about 38 CPM. These checks were “spot checks” and not accumulations averaged by time, which accounts for the variance.
NOTES and CAUTIONS:
(1)I am not an expert nor am I a professional scientist. I am a computer scientist.
(2)I make no claims as to the suppositions I make concerning the isotopes “found”.
(3)The levels found are quite small. None of these levels are very high.
The following energy photopeaks were found, given a full 1 hour test of the paper:
81.39 KeV [Normal Backscatter]
248.72 KeV – 243.941 KeV
306.17 KeV – 304.380 KeV
364.64 KeV – 362.302 KeV
618.65 KeV – 614.529 KeV
The peak is the highest point and the Centroid is the more accurate center of the photopeak, thanks to calculus.
